Bluetooth Low Energy – the next generation

Everyone is familiar with Bluetooth – the technology has revolutionised the way we communicate every day.  But the introduction of the next generation - Bluetooth Low Energy - will appeal across the board for a multitude of applications.

Bluetooth broke the mould when it was first developed, yet it was restricted to certain applications due to its power consumption.  Yet then next version of Bluetooth is a wireless sensor technology due to its Low Energy needs.

What’s so different about BLE?

Bluetooth Low Energy goods consume a fraction of the power of traditional Bluetooth applications and has the ability to extend into other areas such as wellness, sports and entertainment, widening the scope for Bluetooth incorporation into everyday technology. In many cases, it is believed that products using BLE will be able to operate for more than a year on one single button cell battery without recharging. This opens up Bluetooth technology to applications in the medical environment such as constant-wear monitors and other health care equipment.

This new technology means that your personal area network (PAN) can extend to include everything from watches and toys, sports and health equipment, wireless keyboards, gaming consuls – in fact, anything that is Bluetooth Low Energy enabled.

An environmental breakthrough

BLE has come about from the demand from consumers for products that use less energy and are more efficient, reducing both their cost and their impact on the environment. Original Bluetooth technology tends to be very power-hungry, requiring frequent recharging. With new Low Energy designs, that demand has been met, and industry experts see BLE replacing the first generation Bluetooth technology very quickly. With a multitude of different possible applications, BLE will be the future for all wireless Bluetooth technology.

BLE products are expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2010, and Vesternet will be the first place to find them.  Subscribe to our mailing list below and we'll inform you about product releases as they happen.
