What is IFTTT

IFTTT, or If This Then That to give it its full name, is a free web based service that links different cloud-connected devices and services together. It allows you to create simple logic using conditional statements called recipes.

Recipes consist of two elements: a Trigger ("If This") and an Action ("Then That"). The Action is triggered in response to the Trigger. For example, if your front door is opened (a trigger) then you can turn On your Philips Hue bulbs (an action) and send an email with a snapshot taken from your Nest Cam (another action).

By using IFTTT in your Home Automation system you can bring together devices that would otherwise be unable to be used together - for example Philips Hue, Honeywell evohome, GreenIQ, Nest, Netatmo and many more!

Channels

To make recipes easier to create and manage, manufacturers can join the IFTTT developer program, add a Channel for their device and then create "Triggers" and "Actions" for their Channel. End-users can then leverage these to allow integration with other Channels using simple connections called "Recipes".

There are over 350 channels in total with dozens of them dedicated to Home Automation.

Recipes

Recipes are simple connections between devices and / or Apps. There are two types of Recipes: DO Recipes and IF Recipes.

DO Recipes run with a simple tap on an icon in an App on your smartphone or tablet and uses an Action from a Channel to actually DO something. The DO Apps are available for iOS and Android.

IF Recipes run automatically in the background and consists of both a Trigger and an Action. They create powerful connections with one simple statement - If This Then That.

Recipes are incredibly simple to create with just a few clicks. You can also select from thousands of previously created recipes adapting them to your needs.
