Need advice? More information?

When triggered, the LightwaveRF Connect Wall Mountable Motion Detector will activate any number of LightwaveRF home automation devices such as Dimmers, Switches or Power Sockets.

The motion detector also includes:

  • Light Sensor - select the light level that the detector becomes active
  • Variable Delay - automatically turns Off the paired LightwaveRF devices after a selected period

These features make the motion detector extremely versatile. It can be set to control devices only when it's dark or can be used to turn on a light as someone enters a room, and then automatically turn it off when no further movement is detected (the person has left the room).

The PIR is battery-powered so can be positioned anywhere in your home and has many energy saving and security applications.

Available in five finishes - Chrome, Black Chrome, Brass, Stainless Steel and White

Problems with light levels
Having switched the lighting to LigthwaveRF, I thought these sensors looked good. What seemed particularly attractive to me is that they can be set to only send the "on" signal. This means that I can have 2 or more sensors paired to a switch, have the sensors directly send "on" to the switches for a faster response and let my home automation software take care of the "off" (eliminating the possible problem of one sensor sending an "off" while another sensor is still "on"). I have however had problems with the light settings that have made this usage unworkable. I suppose the corridor is a touch dark but, even trying to allow for that, the "L" setting can trigger the switches in levels of light that I'd think should be borderline for the "M" setting. I've since taken them off the walls and experimented with them on my desk and am tempted to call the performance "erratic". One thing I notice is that the sensors seem to take a while to adapt to a change in light level. I don't mean changing the position of the HML swich which is documented but for example holding a sensor under my desk and them bringing it out into daylight. I'll keep the sensors and may yet find there are circumstances where I prefer these to my previous X10 sensors but there are unsuitable for my original intended usage.

Can this be used to control outdoor (porch) lighting?
Greg M. 8 Jan 2016
BEST ANSWER: Technically, you can use this to activate any LightwaveRF devices based on motion. However, this isn't suitable for outside use, unless you have it situated in a very well sheltered porch. Even then it will have difficulty as it is not designed for the wide temperature and damp fluctuations.
