Heating Management

Using Home Automation for Heating Control

In this article we're going to look at how home automation can control your heating system, using it more efficiently and helping you save money.

Adding home automation control to you home's heating system is relatively straightforward and enables you to fine tune your usage through the day and for different days of the week.

Home Automation Heating Control

You decide which areas of your home are heated, when they're heated and to what temperature. For instance you may decide you want the rooms heated to 18°C in the morning, 12°C during the day and 20°C in the evening. The home automation system handles it all for you - no need to worry or think about it.

Create zones that can be individually turned On/Off or be set to different temperatures. This is done using room thermostats and radiator valve controls. The thermostats can be positioned in any room or area of your home, they communicate with the central controller, which then controls the individual radiator valves. These heating zones that can be operated independently of each other giving you a ultimate control over your home's heating.

An example would be to create two zones. During the day only one zone is active and in the evening both become active. This is a great idea if you work from home during the day and only need a small number of rooms heating.

As everything is wirelessly controlled the thermostats can be positioned anywhere you like, there's no changes to your wiring or plumbing.

Less Waste

We're only human and we don't always follow the rules. For instance my son's bedroom is the warmest in the house. His solution is to open his window, which works quite well in January, but wastes a lot of heat. A simple solution is to fit a detector to the window, when the window is opened, the home automation system automatically switches off the room's radiators helping to reduce wasted heat and save costs.

What's available

We offer three main wireless home automation technologies - Z-Wave, LightwaveRF and INSTEON.

Leading technology offers advanced capabilities that make it one of the most flexible solutions for all home automation systems:

  • Two-way wireless communication - all messages acknowledged, if one gets lost it is automatically repeated
  • Mesh networking - automatically covers dead-spots, great for large installations
  • Devices controlled by remote controls, central controllers, smartphone apps and via the Internet
  • Large range of heating products - thermostats, radiator valves, timers and sensors

LightwaveRFLightwaveRF Logo

A new technology which offers a reasonable performance for most home automation applications at a very low cost.

  • Simple wireless technology - does not include two-way communication or mesh networking
  • No Heating products - new range of heating products expected in Spring 2013

An award winning dual-mesh technology that has just been introduced by Vesternet to the UK and European markets.

  • Unique dual-mesh network - signals sent using your home’s wiring and the wireless network
  • Devices controlled by remote controls, central controllers, smartphone apps and via the Internet
  • Very limited range of heating products - expected to expand product range during 2013

Vesternet recommendation

Z-Wave - currently Z-Wave has the most extensive range of heating products available - for this reason it's our recommended heating solution.
However, we do expect LightwaveRF and INSTEON to introduce expanded heating control ranges through 2013, we'll update this page as these products become available.

Choosing your Components

We've compiled a list of products that we feel represent good value for money and provide the features you need to start your home automation heating control system. You don’t need to buy the whole system at once, you can buy what you need and then expand it.

Home Automation ControllersControllers and remotes are the starting point of your smart home system, allowing you to configure and control the whole network. By adding a Gateway Controller, you can also access the network from anywhere in the world using your Smartphone or PC.

The VERA Lite Internet Gateway is designed for users that already have a Wi-Fi router and want to add Z-Wave home control at the most affordable price. If you need a gateway controller with integrated Wi-Fi router, take a look at the VERA3 controller.

Z-Wave Thermostats are battery-powered enabling them to measure and control the temperature of any room. Multiple thermostats can be combined in a Z-Wave system to create independently controlled heating ‘Zones’.

Home Automation ControllersSecure Wall Thermostat with LCD

The Secure Wall Thermostat enables you to control your heating system’s boiler or under-floor heating from any room. It can be used together with the Secure Boiler Receiver to directly switch the boiler On or Off (via Z-Wave).

Everspring temperature & humidity sensor

A combined Temperature and Humidity Sensor enables you to easily monitor and control your home’s environment using a Z-Wave network.

Radiator Control

Home Automation Radiator ThermostatsRadiator valves enable individual radiators to be controlled by the Z-Wave Central Controller or thermostats. The thermostat set point is set by the network or manually, when this set point is reached, the radiator valve turns the radiator On or Off.

Danfoss Radiator Thermostats

Battery-powered thermostats fit easily to most radiator types in just a few minutes. They can be controlled wirelessly via the Z-Wave network or manually using the unit’s three buttons.

Boiler Control

Enable wireless control of your boiler or water valves so that you have full automatic control of your complete heating system.

Secure Boiler ReceiverHome Automation Radiator Thermostats

Controls your heating system's water boiler or magnetic valves. It can be operated remotely by the Z-Wave network or manually using the unit's On/Off buttons. If you need a 2-channel controller - take a look at the Secure Two Channel Receiver.

Fibaro Relay Inserts

Relay Inserts fit into the existing electrical junction box supplying power to the boiler. The insert enables the boiler to be controlled
On/Off by the Z-Wave controller or thermostats.

Additional sensors allow the system to monitor events that affect the heating system. Sensors placed on windows or outside doors can
alert the controller to adjust local heating when a window or door is left open.

Home Automation Door/Window SensorsFibaro Universal Door and Window Sensor - Z-Wave

Incredibly versatile 3-in–1 Sensor detects movement as a door or window is opened/closed, measures temperature and can take input from any ‘Binary Sensor’. Probably the best sensor for any Z-Wave network and at a fantastic price.

Everspring Door & Window Detector - Z-Wave

Detects when a door or window has been opened or closed and sends a message to the Z-Wave network.

Heating Guides

Tips for Reducing Heating Costs

Home automation and a little thought can help you make significant savings in your heating costs.

  • Setting a thermostat to a higher setting doesn't make the room heat up any faster, but it does waste energy and increase your heating bill - resist the temptation and leave the home automation system to look after your heating
  • Turning a thermostat to a lower setting will control the room at a lower temperature and save energy
  • To set the most efficient temperature for your home, set the thermostat to 18°C and then increase it by 1° each day until you reach a comfortable temperature - any setting above this point is wasting energy
  • Ensure that the thermostat has a free flow of air - otherwise you'll be heating the room to a higher temperature than you need
  • Consider using 'Zones' so that you only heat the areas of your home that you need to

Implementing even a simple home automation system enables you to conveniently control your Smart Home's heating system and reduce your energy costs.

  • Save Energy - you can achieve the greatest energy savings by implementing smart heating control
  • Control - using 'Zones' enables you to fine tune where and how you heat your home
  • Convenience - control your heating from anywhere in your home or even remotely
  • Expandable - all Vesternet home automation systems can expand to cover lighting, power and security
