Excellent and extremely versatile controller
Like all things HomeSeer, the price of these units is eye-watering. Sure, you could take the option of using an existing PC, or building a mini computer from scratch, but if you go down the HomeSeer route, you still need the HomeSeer software and probably the Designer software too. So if you take a pragmatic approach, the cost isn't ridiculous. Ok, I lie. it is ridiculous. But heck, you end up with a fantastic home controller. I've had my HomeSeer device now for over a year, having first entered the Z-Wave arena with a Fibraro Home Controller. I got loads of "dead nodes" with the Fibaro system, so got rid of it. Next up was a Vera 3. A nice bit of kit, for sure, and supposedly simple to use. UI5 was awful to look at, but it did the job, and besides, most of the control was either automatic, or responded to switches scattered around the home - or the iPhone app (I can recommend HomeWave for the iPhone, by the way). Then UI7 came out and things started to look grim. Surely, it was supposedly still "easy to use" (though I'd have to question that), but it really wasn't up to the job of being able to do anything "clever" without installing plug-ins. And as good as the plug-ins were, you still felt you were at the mercy of other people. Alternatively, sure, you could write your own scripts using LUA, but heck, that wasn't easy, either. I even upgraded to a Vera Plus, but kinda wish I hadn't. And then, way back, I remember using HomeSeer software to control my old X-10 kit.. The software looked basic and old-fashioned, but it seemed to do the trick. I investigated HomeSeer further, and how it integrated with Z-wave, and a sense of relief and joy came over. It was like an old friend returning - and that feeling has continued ever since I moved away from Vera and invested (albeit, heavily) into HomeSeer. I like the fact that right from the start you can set up pretty complicated IF-OR-AND-THEN logic, and everything just makes sense. Albeit through the use of plugins, nearly every type of device, using nearly every type of protocol, can be linked together through HomeSeer and talk together. I like how I can still use my relatively cheap X-10 RF remote controls. I like how I can use all my X-10 kit. I like how I can write simple scripts in Basic. I like how everything talks to everything else. It just works. Anything I don't like? Sure. The cost, for starters! Then there's the price of plug-ins. Ok, you don't HAVE to buy any, but you might find the odd plug-in useful down the road. Oh, and finally, as great as the software is, the interface does feel rather dated. Not that this is necessarily a problem, however. The absence of snazzy javascript visual trickery behind the scenes is actually quite welcome - and at least you can get the the bits you want to configure or control quickly and easily. And for me, that's far more important than having some snazzy GUI with drop down accordions, faded animations, and the like. If you're serious about home automation, want to integrate just about any automation product with ease, want to be able to write scripts to do really clever things, and still be easy to use and allow excellent iPad/iPhone/Android GUIs to control your home, then this is a no brainer. Certainly no regrets from me. Was the best system years ago - and still remains the best.
