A smoke detector primarily detects the presence of smoke particles in the air, which are indicative of a fire. There are two main types of smoke detectors: ionization detectors, which are more responsive to flaming fires and detect smoke through ionized particles disrupting an electrical current, and photoelectric detectors, which are more responsive to smoldering fires and detect smoke by sensing changes in light caused by smoke particles. Both types aim to provide early warning of fire hazards.
