Zigbee, a popular protocol for low-power, low-data-rate wireless communication, has been increasingly supplemented by newer standards like Thread and Bluetooth Mesh. Thread, in particular, offers similar mesh networking capabilities but with enhanced security and IP compatibility, making it a strong alternative. Additionally, the emergence of Matter (formerly Project CHIP), which supports multiple protocols including Thread and Wi-Fi, aims to unify smart home communication standards, potentially reducing reliance on Zigbee.
