An unsafe level of carbon monoxide (CO) is generally considered to be any concentration above 9 parts per million (ppm) over 8 hours, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Levels of 35 ppm or higher over 1 hour are especially dangerous and can cause health problems. Prolonged exposure to high CO levels can lead to serious illness or death.
