What is a Plugin

A Plugin is a piece of software that acts as an add-on containing a group of functions that you can "plug in" to another software – hence the name "Plugin".

Sometimes referred to as "extensions", "add-ins" or "add-ons" they help make the base software do something that it doesn’t normally do by itself.

In a Home Automation system Plugins can extend functionality or add new features to your controller, making it easier for you to add new technologies to your system without the hassle of writing your own software code.

Like a smartphone ot tablet App, Plugins can either be "official" - where they are developed, released and supported by the controller manufacturer - or "third-party" - where they are developed, released and supported by individuals. Some Plugins must be purchased while the vast majority are free.

It is also worth noting that Plugins usually do not come with technical support, especially when using those developed by third-parties. For this reason it is important to be careful when choosing which ones you want to install and rely on! We recommend that you thoroughly research any Plugin that you intend to use by visiting the relevant user forums as this can highlight any potential issues that you may need to be aware of.
