How does the Domitech Dimmable LED Bulb work with a wall switch?

Question

How does the Domitech Dimmable LED Bulb work with a wall switch?

Answer

The Domitech ZBulb is an intelligent, fully-dimmable bulb that can be controlled via normal wall switch or a Z-Wave controller.

How these actually work is that they allow you to turn the bulb On or Off from the light switch but the light switch has to be left in the On position to maintain power to the bulb so that it can be controlled by Z-Wave.

What this really means is that the bulb recognises certain “Off-On cycles“ and reacts to them.

An "Off-On" cycle from the wall switch is considered a Toggle Command - one cycle (Off-On) will turn the Bulb On while two cycles (Off-On-Off-On) will turn it Off (even though the power is actually still On).

While this does work with a normal "Toggle" wall switch you’ll always have to make sure the wall switch stays in the On position.

Using a Momentary wall switch that is wired on the NC (Normaly Closed) side to permanently power the bulb will make a "double click" on the Momentary wall switch turn the bulb off and another "double click" on the Momentary wall switch turn the bulb On.

Examples

Toggle Switch

For simplicity lets say the Toggle Switch Up is Off (circuit open) and Down is On (circuit closed).

  • Replace your bulb with a Domitech LED Bulb
  • Push the wall switch Down
  • Follow the process for Inclusion in the manual to Include the Domitech LED Bulb into your Z-Wave Network
  • On the Wall Switch click Up-Down – the Domitech LED Bulb will turn On
  • Click Up-Down-Up-Down – the Domitech LED Bulb will turn Off

Note that the Toggle Switch needs to stays Down (On) in the end.

Momentary Switch

  • Replace your bulb with a Domitech LED Bulb
  • Make sure the bulb is wired to the NC connecion
  • Follow the process for Inclusion in the manual to Include the Domitech LED Bulb into your Z-Wave Network
  • Click the Momentary wall switch – the Domitech LED Bulb will turn On
  • Double-click the Momentary wall switch again – the Domitech LED Bulb will turn Off

Note: Take care with the Off-On cycling of the wall switch as it's possible to factory reset the Domitech LED Bulb if too many cycles are completed in a short period of time!
