Using Domoticz with the RFXtrx433E USB RF 433.92 MHz Transceiver

This guide shows how to configure the RFXtrx433E USB 433.92 MHz transceiver in the Domoticz Home Automation software on the Raspberry Pi.

Domoticz is a well supported and actively developed piece of software that can be used as a Home Automation system in it's own right.

When coupled with a Rasberry Pi, it makes a great value for money Home Automation Controller that can integrate many different technologies.

The RFXtrx433E USB 433.92 MHz transceiver with antenna is a very cost effective 433.92 MHz RF transceiver that is capable of receiving from and transmitting to a wide range of devices.

Prerequisites


Before beginning, it is assumed that you have already completed the initial installation of Domoticz on your Raspberry Pi.

If you haven't completed this step yet, we recommend that you follow the tutorial here - it's a relatively simple process and mainly involves downloading the Domoticz "image" and writing it to an appropriately sized SD Card using the software included with the download.

Once Domoticz is installed, you should be able to connect to the web based User Interface by accessing "http://IPADDRESS:8080" where "IPADDRESS" matches the IP address of your Raspberry Pi (this will be given out by the DHCP server in your Broadband Router, or you may have set a "static" IP address during installation).

We also recommend that you follow the previous application guide in this series as this will show you how to configure Domoticz to suit our intended usage scenarios.

Prepare the RFXtrx433E


Ensure that your RFXtrx433E is running the correct firmware, it should be at least version 226.

The firmware version can be checked and updated if required using the "RFXmngr" and "RFXflash" software from the RFXCom web site.

Installing the RFXtrx433E


Once the RFXtrx433E has been loaded with an appropriate firmware version, simply connect it to the Raspbarry Pi with the included USB cable.

To see which USB port the RFXtrx433E has been allocated, you need to access the "Linux Shell" - if you've followed our previous application guide, you should be getting proficient with this by now!

  • Access the Linux Shell and enter the following command:

  • You should see something like the below output:

  • Here you can see that the RFXtrx433E has been assigned the USB port "ttyUSB0", make a note of this for later use!
  • Restart Domoticz so that it can pick up the new USB port:

Thankfully that's the only interaction with the Linux Shell in this guide!

Next we need to configure Domoticz to use the RFXtrx433E and we do this in the Domoticz User Interface (UI).

  • Click "Setup" on the Domoticz menu, followed by "Hardware".

  • We need to add the RFXtrx433E device next. Make sure "Enabled" is ticked, then type a descriptive name in the "Name" field.
  • From the dropdown "Type" list, select "RFXCOM - RFXtrx433 USB 433.92MHz Transceiver":

  • From the dropdown "Serial Port" list, select the USB port that you noted down earlier - "/dev/ttyUSB0" in our case.
  • Finally click the "Add" button:

  • Your RFXtrx433E device should now be shown in the list - click on the "Set Mode" button next to it:

  • On this page we need to select the different "protocols" that we want the RFXtrx433E to enable transmission and reception of.
  • We recommend that you only enable the protocols that you actually need, here we are enabling protocols to match the devices we have in our system.
  • Click the "Set Mode" button when you are done:

  • If you quickly switch over to the "Log" page in Domoticz (click "Setup"->"Log"), you will see messages showing the if the configuration of the RFXtrx433E is successful or not:

Adding RF devices


The RFXtrx433E should now be installed and working correctly, so it's time to add your first RF device!.

The RF devices that are supported by the RFXtrx433E are typically either devices that "transmit" or devices that "receive".


Transmit devices


Devices that transmit will be automatically created by Domoticz, so we'll take a look at some of those first.

  • Click "Setup" on the Domoticz menu, followed by "Devices".

  • In the "Search:" box type "rfx" and press "Enter" to filter the devices to those created by the RFXtrx433E.
  • Click the "arrow" next to the device you wish to add, here we have selected an Oregon Scientific Temperature Sensor:

  • Give the device a descriptive name in the "Add Device" popup and click "Add Device":

  • Your device will be added to the appropriate section in the Domoticz UI. In the example here, it will be shown on the "Temperature" tab.
  • You can also click on the "star" (favourite) icon to add it to the main "Dashboard":

  • For most devices Domoticz will gather and record appropriate data over a period of time.
  • By clicking on the "Log" button you can access graphs for your device:

  • Our next device will be a Visonic Powermax Door / Window Sensor, so we follow the same process as before. Click the "arrow":

  • Give the device a descriptive name and click "Add Device":

  • This particular device appears on the "Switches" tab of the Domoticz UI:

Receive devices


Devices that receive need to be added to Domoticz manually, here we'll take a look at adding a LightwaveRF Dimmer Switch.

  • Click on the "Switches" tab in the Domoticz UI, then click the "Manual Light/Switch" button:

  • From the "Hardware" dropdown list select "RFXtrx433E", then give the device a descriptive name.
  • Change the "Switch Type" field to "Dimmer" and the "Type" field to "LightwaveRF".
  • For the "ID" and "Unit Code" fields you need to select a unique combination - this is similar to how a LightwaveRF Remote Control would pair with a LightwaveRF device.
  • Place the LightwaveRF device into "pairing" mode by following the process detailed in the manual and click the "Test" button to complete the pairing.
  • Finally, click on "Add Device" to add the device to Domoticz:

  • Domoticz will add a normal "On / Off" icon for the device, so we need to change that for a more appropriate "Dimmer" type.
  • Click on the "Edit" button:

  • Change the "Switch Type" to "Dimmer" and click the "Save" button:
