Aeon Z-Wave Stick - main

Take control of Z-Wave devices from your computer.

Aeotec Z Stick Gen5 is a Z-Wave USB dongle. When attached to a host processor, it becomes a Z-Wave communication device, which exposes the zensys api (serialapi) through integrated USB. This device is meant primarily to allow a host processor to control up to 232 Z-Wave devices using the Z-Wave technology protocol all the while simplifying Z-Wave network installation.

The Z Stick Gen5 is easily upgradeable by the end-user such that the latest Z-Wave protocols and commands are always available. It can be upgraded in field via its USB port which also serves as a charging port for its internal battery.

Aeotec's Z Stick  makes your computer the heart of your Z-Wave network that enables you to create a remote network that's capable of controlling all aspects of your Z-Wave home automation system. It includes a battery and a simple push button that makes it easy and convenient to connect any computer with the Z-Wave network. In fact, the plug-and-play device can be connected with your PC, Laptop, Mac, and even embedded computer systems like Raspberry Pi to include/exclude modules or connect to any Z-wave devices that's discoverable in your mesh.

Aeotec Z Stick is fully compatible with Linux, Mac, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 systems, and can be operated through softwares, like, Homeseer, Indigo, Z-Way and Domoticz. When configured with a Z-wave network, Z Stick can potentially turn your personal computer into a central controller/hub of your home automation system.

Note: No software is included with this controller. You need to use a suitable PC or Mac software such as Homeseer, Indigo, Domoticz, etc. Have a look at the available options, here.

Works very well (So Far...)
Using it with HomeSeer on Windows PC. HomeSeer identified it immediately. And it works very well with some Fibaro modules I have. It is placed in the same location I had my Vera controller before, and the Aeotec seems to have much stronger ZWAVE reception than the Vera. Modules that kept disconnecting before work flawlessly now.

Works well, and easy to install/configure
As usual, Verternet provided a swift delivery. I love this item as it just works. This is my second controller of this brand. I use it with a staging/development installation of Openhab2 running on a ubuntu 17.04 platform. My production environment uses the same controller completely problem free.

So far, so good
Only used it with a DomiTech bulb so far, but it all works fine, using Domoticz on a PC. Hope to control a Comet TRV when that arrives. The stick also works OK through a USB hub. Ultimately, I will be running Domoticz on a Raspberry Pi along with a Python program that will interrogate the booking system for our village hall and send commands to Domoticz to control the temperatures of the various rooms according to bookings throughout the day... I hope!

it's working fine
it's good stuff. Only hardiness is to collect info regarding use on PC. Maybe some technical suggestion about installation and usage would be useful to buyer. AIMTools see it and read data but some service sw needed to use.

The 80's disco show.
The item arrived promptly after placing the order. Installation went quickly and painlessly. The only thing worth mentioning is that AEON decided to show that the stick is working correctly by cycling the light through different colours. This, of course, enticed the exact opposite reaction from my part. Bottom line: The 80's disco show is just an indication that everything is fine.

Why did you choose this?
Vesternet Store
This was a tricky choice since the ultimate target platform is Raspberry Pi, but this allows development on Windows too, so seemed a better bet to start with.

On OSX, are there any economical ways to get IFTTT type behaviour from the Z-stick (eg raising Apple events) - or Indigo the only game in town other than DIY?

QNAP, OpenHAB + Aeon Labs Z-Stick USB, possible? I'm guessing this is possible, there is a package for OpenHab that will install on QNAP, so if I stick this USB stick into the back of the QNAP box will I be good to go?
Tim B. 4 Nov 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it's possible and als while at it, check out the Virtualhere app for gnap.. Eman.
Does this stick battery prevent it from forgetting the network routing? I bought the UZB and whenever i unplug it from the pc or just reboot the pc, all routing is reset and it starts all over again resulting many times in dead nodes.. Is this the correct behaviour? Dow the Aeon stick do the same?
Nomader 4 Sep 2016
BEST ANSWER: If you are using HomeSeer, everything should be fine because the information or settings are kept on the server. But anything else, I don't know.
Can this be used with Fibaro Smoke and Water sensons, with just a notebook and some tools without a Home Center ?
Marius I. 4 Jul 2016
BEST ANSWER: You could use this with a notebook that is running a suitable Home Automation software package, as an alternative to a Fibaro Home Centre, but there are several caveats - you'd need to ensure (1) there is a suitable device driver from Aeon Labs for your notebook OS, (2) the Home Automation Software (eg: Homeseer or Insteon) is compatible with your notebook OS and all Z-Wave devices you'd want to control. You'd also need to keep the notebook in situ and turned on at all times that you want to monitor or control your Z-Wave devices - it's obviously not going to work if the laptop's turned off and in your backpack on the Tube. "Aeotec by Aeon Labs: Z-Stick Gen5 Quick Start Guide" gives more detailed info.
Can this be used as a secondary device with another remote?
Martin M. 6 Jun 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Martin, I'm not sure about remotes but I can't see why not.I use the USB stick with either domoticz or hs3 as a transeiver. Other z-wave devices are controllable via triggers set in either software. Example. A z-wave pir detects movement, sends a motion detected command to hs3 or domoticz via the USB receiver. A trigger or event is defined when movement is detected, switch on a light for x minutes. Not sure how much you know about home automation and I apologise if I'm explaining stuff you already know. Please feel free to ask any more questions. Regards Chris
Will this allow me to set z-wave parameters on individual devices using my Mac?
markstickley 9 May 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Mark, Yes, you will be able to configure each individual Node with this device. You will need some software to help you do that. Indigo has a free trial or you could use openHab with the Habmin plugin. HTH
