Adding and Configuring the Aeon MultiSensor using VERA

The Aeon Labs MultiSensor (4-in-1) is an extremely versatile sensor, including motion, temperature, light, and humidity sensors, however, it can be confusing to configure.

This guide shows how to install and configure the Aeon MultiSensor using the VERA Z-Wave Controller.

Adding the MultiSensor to the Z-Wave Network

Before adding (including) the MultiSensor to the Z-Wave network, you need to ensure you have the latest firmware installed and decide how the MultiSensor will be powered.

  • VERA Firmware - v1.5.622 or later
  • Aeon MultiSensor firmware - v1.18 or later
  • Power - It's important to 'Include' the MultiSensor while it's powered as you intent to use it.
    If you're going to use batteries, install and include the MultiSensor while it's using batteries power. If you plan to use USB powered, then include while running on USB power
  • Position - install the MultiSensor in the location you intend to use it, this ensures that the Z-Wave routing is correct
  • Include:
    • Move VERA to within 1m of the MultiSensor and put VERA into Inclusion mode
    • Inside the MultiSensor press the 'Inclusion' button
    • VERA's Orange LED will flash rapidly while including the MultiSensor

After the MultiSensor is included, you will have four device icons in VERA, one for each sensor within the MultiSensor.

Configuration

When configuring the MultiSensor, you should bare in mind the following points:

Only make configuration changes on the parent device

The motion sensor (Aeon MultiSensor in the screenshot) acts as the parent device - all configuration changes are made in the parent device.

Important - do not make changes to the configuration settings in the other icons (light, temp and Humidity Sensor) - this will result in an error message for that sensor icon

Wake-up the MultiSensor if Battery Powered

If the MultiSensor is being powered from batteries then it will spend most of its time asleep. Like all battery-powered devices it must be awake to accept new configuration settings. The best process to update the configuration settings is:

  • Click the Motion sensor's 'Wrench' icon
  • Configure the parameters in the 'Device Options' tab
  • Click 'SAVE' in VERA
  • In the 'Settings' tab click 'Configure node right now'
  • Press the MultiSensor include switch three times to make it wakeup
  • Wait for VERA to finish setting the MultiSensor's configurations
  • If the device icon displays a red error message such as 'Unable to configure node' the device was probably not awake when VERA tried to update the MultiSensor parameters
  • You can also check that the parameter has been correctly saved by clicking 'Reload' and then check 'VariableSet' and 'VariableGet' in the 'Advanced' tab

Parameter Settings

After being included, the MultiSensor needs a few parameters changing. These suggested parameters can be changed to suit your set up.

Settings Tab

  • Wakeup Interval (seconds) - 720
  • Poll this node at most once every - 360
  • Important - the Poll Interval MUST be smaller than the Wakeup Interval and non-zero
  • These are the default Wakeup and Poll intervals, can can increase them to increase battery life

Device Options Tab

Unusually for VERA, all the common parameters are already populated in the 'Device Options' tab.

  • 2 - Wake on battery insert - 1 (default)
  • 3 - Motion Timeout - 240 (default) - length of time before motion sensor changes it's state to No Motion
    This sets how long an associated light will stay on before being turned off automatically (when the MultiSensor is directly asociated with the Z-Wave device controling the light)
  • 4 - PIR enabled - 1 (default)
  • 5 - PIR Command - 2 - Basic or Enhanced Z-Wave command sets, use 1 for directly association the MultiSensor to another device
  • 111- 720 (default) - time between temperature reports
  • 112- 720 (default) - time between light level reports
  • 113- 720 (default) - time between humidity reports
  • Note - parameters 111, 112, & 113 are set in VERA to 720 as default, you should not need to be change these, especially if powered by batteries
  • 101 - which sensor reports are automatically sent to the Z-Wave network.
    It is a combination number made up of the sum of the values for the individual sensors and battery. The sensors have the values:
    • Temperature - 32
    • Humidity - 64
    • Light Level - 128
    • Battery - 1
    Therefore if you want all sensors and the battery sending regular reports, set parameter 101 to 225 (32 + 64 + 128 + 1).

USB Powered Settings

The above settings are designed to conserve battery power, by keeping the MultiSensor asleep for as long as possible and only sending temperature, humidity and light reports every 12 minutes (720 seconds).

If you're using USB power you can change these settings to increase the report frequency to as often as you like.

False Triggering

We have seen occasions of the MultiSensor giving false triggers - it reports motion when there has been none.

We have found that extending the Wake-up and Poll intervals significantly reduces or even removes these false triggers.

  • Wakeup Interval (seconds) - 10,800
  • Poll this node at most once every - 1,680
  • Important - the Poll Interval MUST be smaller than the Wakeup Interval and non-zero
