2-Way Lighting using LightwaveRF Wireless Dimmers

This guide shows an alternative way to use LightwaveRF Dimmers to control 2-way lighting circuits.

Normally LightwaveRF Dimmers are used together with LightwaveRF Slave Dimmers, however you can also use the Dimmers with the LightwaveRF Wireless On/Off dimmers - this is easier to wire and easier to install.

For an introduction to using the LightwaveRF Dimmers in 2-Way lights, take a look at APNT-4 - 2-Way Lighting Using LightwaveRF Dimmers.

Standard 2-Way Wiring

Application Note 2-way WiringFigure 1: A standard 2-Way Wiring System.

A 2-core cable (brown and blue) carries the Live and Switched Live to the wall switch and up to the light fitting. An extra 3-core cable (brown, black and grey) connects the two wall switches together; enabling each of them to independently turn the light On or Off.
Note: in some installations two 2-core cables may have been used to connect the switches together, if this is the case the individual cables will be brown and blue rather than brown, black, and grey.

LightwaveRF Dimmer and Wireless Switch

To install LightwaveRF into a 2-way lighting system, you normally replace one switch with a LightwaveRF 1-gang Dimmer and the second switch with a LightwaveRF Slave Dimmer as shown in APNT-4 - 2-Way Lighting Using LightwaveRF Dimmers.

However, using the LightwaveRF Slave dimmers can be difficult as you may need to replace multi-gang wall switches.

A simple alternative is to use the LightwaveRF Wireless On/Off Dimmer switches. These switches are completely wireless, they have no electrical connections and can be installed anywhere. They are just like a remote control, but look like a wall switch, they are available in 1-gang and 2-gang versions.

As they are battery-powered they can be positioned anywhere and you can use them to replace the existing wall switch

The diagram (Figure 2) shows a LightwaveRF Dimmer wired into the light circuit and the 2-way wiring between the switches terminated into terminal blocks. These wires are not required when the LightwaveRF Wireless switch is used - they are terminated for safety and just in case you wish to use them in the future.

The Wireless Switch is 'paired' with the Dimmer, so the lights can be controlled from either switch - just like the original system as well as being able to be controlled wirelessly by the LightwaveRF system.

Multi-Way Control

The wireless wall switches can be used to control multi-way lighting systems - even if the original circuits weren't 2-way.

The diagram shows a simplified installation with two 2-way circuits and one 1-way circuit.

  • A - 1-Gang dimmer (master) is controlled by Wireless switch C
  • B - 1-Gang dimmer (master) is controlled by Wireless switch C
  • C - 2-Gang wireless On/Off Dimmer switch, controlling A and B
  • D - 1-Gang wireless On/Off Dimmer switch, controlling B (can be paired to one or both circuits of B)

Installing the Fibaro Dimmer modules involve working with 240V mains wiring. If you are not comfortable doing this you should consult a qualified electrician. This application note is provided as a guide, all work is are carried out at your own risk. Vesternet do not accept any responsibility or liability.
