The Aeon Labs Micro Smart Energy (G2) modules replace existing in-wall switch and dimmer controls and enable Z-Wave wireless control of lights and other small appliances. They can also report actual power consumption (in W) and the accumulated power used (in kWh); ideal to help reduce your energy costs.

Product Details:

The smart energy products are available in two versions, each can be controlled manually or using a Z-Wave remote, central controller or from a computer or smartphone.

Aeon Labs Micro Smart Energy Illuminator

Z-Wave light dimmer provides dimming and On/Off control of lights with a maximum load of 2.5A. It can be used with lamps that are dimmable, including halogen and incandescent lamps

Aeon Labs Micro Smart Energy Switch

Z-Wave switch controls (On/Off) lights with a maximum load of 10A.

Note: These units require a 3-wire system (including neutral), please check your installation before purchasing. More information is available in Application Note 23 - Understanding 2-wire and 3-wire Lighting Systems.

It is noisy. Connecting to SmartThings wasn't smooth
It took a while until it connected to SmartThings. It required to reboot ST, and enabling z-wave exclusion mode. I don't know what eventually fixed the connection error but I had to spend 30 minutes googleing, rebooting, etc. There is a noise when relay is off, and a louder noise when relay is on, sort of like a small electric motor. The click when relay closes is also very loud. I wouldn't have this in a living area. I have mine in the loft. It is quite thick so I couldn't fit into a 40mm deep box with a switch, I had to mount another box. Connection is unreliable. About five out of ten couldn't switch off from SmartThings if it was switched on using the physical switch. I am using a retractive (momentary) switch. Same happened when a time was supposed to switch off the light, so it looks I still have to check the lights once in a while to ensure someone didn't forget to switch them off. It isn't a range issue because is right above the hub with only a plasterboard between the two. Note that the main picture is not for this product.

Got there in the end
As a complete beginner to automation, I struggled with some of the terminology and the American wiring practices, but I got there in the end. The product itself is a lovely piece of kit and I shall be ordering more as my project develops.

Brilliant Product
I havw bought two of the Illuminator (Dimmer) models over the past few months and I can honestly say they have been the easiest to setup and maintain. The energy consumption readout is a bonus too. Pairing was a since with my Vera Lite on UI5.

Do these work independently of the physical switch? If the switch is set to off can I still turn on/off the lights via z-wave?
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The switch controls the relay and not the power to the relay or lights. We don't have a wiring guide for the Aeon, but we do for Fibaro - the principles are exactly the same -
Will this work with dimmable LED bulbs?
Jez B. 2 Mar 2016
BEST ANSWER: Aeon say this cannot be used with LEDs unless they have been specifically designed for leading-edge dimmers. A much better solution is the Fibaro or Qubino dimmers - both are trailing-edge dimmers and work very well with LEDs. Also the Aeon modules all need neutral, so in most cases you'd not be able to install it at the switch as there is rarely neutral available there (what we call a 2-wire system). The Fibaro Dimmer 2 can work with or without neutral.
Do UK building regulations allow me to self-install this product? I am competant at DIY
28 Jan 2016
BEST ANSWER: It would depend on where you install it. So long as you wire it correctly and take suitable precautions then you can wire this (or any Z-Wave module) yourself.
What is the voltage on the wall switch connectors? I.e. can I use a low voltage 12V switch or a 220V switch is required?
11 Jan 2016
BEST ANSWER: I was expecting more from Vesternet, this kind of answer I could get from any webshop or forum who are not specialized. I got my switch and I measured the voltage on switch pins and is 3.4V DC, what corresponds to the label on 3rd pin and to having smaller connection points for switch than for mains (i.e. requires a 2.4mm screwdriver to secure the wires connecting to switch). This means that a low voltage switch (i.e. one used in cars) can be used.
