Typical Garage Door Controller
A typical garage door opener (controller) is shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1: Typical Electric Door Opener - Controller
This system has a motor that is controlled from a main control unit. This control unit often has an external momentary style switch wired to it - press the switch once and the garage door is opened, press it again and the door closes. Each time the switch is released it returns to its normal open position ready for the next operation.
Using a Fibaro Z-Wave Relay
The Fibaro Fibaro 1 x 2.5Kw Relay (FGS212) is a single channel relay with volt-free (dry) contacts. In this application it mimics the behaviour of the existing momentary switch. We show this wired in parallel with the existing switch in Figure 2, you can also remove the existing switch if you wish.
Figure 2: Using the Fibaro 1x 2.5Kw relay (FGS-212) to trigger the door control
Once you have the 1x 2.5Kw relay wired into the circuit and included into the Z-Wave system, you need to change one of the relay's configuration parameters so that it mimics the behaviour of a momentary switch.
Relay to act as a Momentary Switch
When turned On wirelessly (Z-Wave) the relay would stay On until told to turn Off. In this application we need it to behave like a momentary switch, so that it turns off after a short period of around 1 second.
The relay includes an automatic off delay timer, this delay is controlled by configuration parameter 4.
Fibaro Relay Parameter Setting:
The following parameter needs to be set:
- 4 - 10 - turns channel 1 off after 1sec (setting is in 0.1s increments)
Using a Qubino Z-Wave Relay
The Qubino 1D Relay (ZMNHND1) can be used in exactly the same way - wiring is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 2: Using the Qubino 1D relay to trigger the door control
Once you have the Quibino relay wired into the circuit and included into the Z-Wave system, you need to set its auto-off function to mimic a momentary switch.
Qubino Relay Parameter Setting:
The following parameters need to be set:
- 11 - 1 - turns channel 1 off after 1sec (setting is in 1s increments)
- 15 - 0 (default) - sets increments to 1s
