Introducing the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 (V4): The Next-Generation SmartThings Hub

David Bell |

The long-awaited Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 (V4) has arrived. Built for the future of the smart home, it brings modern standards like Matter, Thread, and Zigbee 3.0 to the centre of your setup.

But this isn’t a replacement for everyone — instead, it sits alongside the existing Aeotec Smart Home Hub (V3), giving customers two excellent options depending on their needs.

In this article, we’ll show you what’s new, how it compares to the Hub V3, and help you decide which one is right for your home.

Aeotec Hub 2 at a Glance

The Hub 2 is designed for those looking to build a modern, Matter-first system.

Highlights include:

  • Matter support – control thousands of devices from 270+ brands.
  • Zigbee 3.0 – direct connection for up to 150 Zigbee devices.
  • Thread border router built-in – no extra hardware required.
  • Wi-Fi & Ethernet connectivity – flexible for any home network.
  • Local processing – faster, more reliable automations.
  • Compact size – 95 × 95 × 25 mm.

It’s fast, future-proof, and ideal if you’re starting fresh or want to lean fully into Matter, Zigbee and Thread.

Both Hubs Have Their Place

Choose Hub 2 if you’re building a new smart home and want a platform built around Matter, Zigbee and Thread.

Choose Hub V3 if you already have Z-Wave devices you want to keep using, or if you’re not ready to rebuild your system from scratch.

Think of it not as one replacing the other, but as two strong choices designed for different types of customers.

Migration Note

SmartThings doesn’t currently support backup & restore. Switching from V3 to Hub 2 means re-pairing devices and recreating automations. For small setups this is simple; for larger ones, it may take more time.
